Change Order

Change Order

Change orders are amendments to an existing contract between a buyer and a seller. Change orders typically occur when the buyer wants to make changes to the scope of work, timeline, or price outlined in the original contract.

A change order can be initiated by either the buyer or the seller, but must be agreed upon by both parties before it can take effect. If the parties cannot agree on the terms of a change order, they may need to seek mediation or arbitration from a third party. Change orders can be used to make minor adjustments to a contract, or they can completely alter the agreement.

Change orders should be made in writing and signed by both parties in order to be legally binding. Change orders can be made retroactively, but this is not recommended as it can create confusion and cause legal issues down the road. It is best practice to put all changes into a written amendment as soon as possible after the change is agreed upon verbally.
