Human Rights Definition

Human rights are certain inalienable rights that every person is entitled to simply because they are human. These rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from torture and inhuman or degrading treatment, freedom from slavery and servitude, the right to a fair trial, and many others.

While the concept of human rights has a long history, it was only in the last century that these rights were codified into international law. The most important document in this regard is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. This document sets out the fundamental principles of human rights and has been hugely influential in shaping our understanding of these rights today.
