United Nations

United Nations Definition

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.

The UN Headquarters are located in New York City, and the organization has more than 190 member states. The main organs of the UN are the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Secretariat, and the International Court of Justice. The UN also has a wide range of specialized agencies, such as UNESCO, UNHCR, UNICEF etc.

The UN’s mission is ‘to maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations; to achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural or humanitarian character, and in promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms’.
