Best Alternative To A Negotiated Agreement (Batna)

The Best Alternative To A Negotiated Agreement, or BATNA, is the course of action that will be taken if an agreement cannot be reached. This could include going to arbitration, mediation, or simply walking away from the negotiation.

The concept of BATNA is important in negotiations because it provides each party with a Plan B. Having a Plan B gives each party more bargaining power and can help them reach a better agreement.

If you’re preparing for a negotiation, it’s important to first identify your BATNA. Once you know your BATNA, you can make sure that any agreement you reach is better than what you would get if you took your BATNA.
