Bribery

Bribery Definition

Bribery is the act of offering, promising, giving, or accepting a financial or other advantage in order to influence the actions, decisions, or opinions of another person in a way that is illegal or dishonest.

Bribery is a serious problem because it can lead to corruption, which undermines government, business, and society. Corruption occurs when bribery takes place in an environment where there is an unequal power relationship between the person offering the bribe and the person receiving it. This can lead to the misuse of power and resources for personal gain.

Bribery is prohibited by law in many countries. The United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) defines bribery as ‘the offering, promising, giving or accepting of an undue advantage.’ UNCAC also requires signatory countries to criminalize bribery of foreign public officials.
