Closed Shops Definition

A closed shop is a business establishment that requires employees to join a union as a condition of employment. Closed shops are legal in the United States, but are increasingly rare. In a closed shop, the employer and the union agree that only union members may be hired or retained as employees. New employees must generally join the union within a specified period after being hired.
