Cost Basis

Cost Basis is the original value of an asset for tax purposes. It is used in the calculation of gains and losses when the asset is sold, exchanged, or some other taxable event occurs. Cost basis includes not only the purchase price of the asset but also any associated costs such as brokerage fees and taxes. The cost basis gives an investor an understanding of how much capital has been invested in an asset and is therefore a key factor in calculating potential returns.
