Taxonomies Definition

A taxonomy is a system for classifying or organizing objects. In the broadest sense, taxonomies can be used to organize anything, from books in a library to plants in a botanical garden. Taxonomies are usually created in order to make it easier to find information or objects.

There are different types of taxonomies, but the most common are hierarchical and faceted. In a hierarchical taxonomy, items are organized into categories, with each category containing subcategories. For example, a library might use a hierarchical taxonomy to classify books by subject matter. In a faceted taxonomy, items are classified according to multiple criteria, or facets. For example, a library might use a faceted taxonomy to classify books by both subject matter and author.

Taxonomies can be created for any purpose, but they are especially useful for organizing large amounts of information. When used in the context of information management, taxonomies can help users find the information they need more quickly and easily.
