Involuntary attrition is the loss of employees from a company due to circumstances outside of their own control, such as layoffs, budget reductions, reorganizations, or terminations due to performance issues. This can also refer to an employee who leaves the company after his or her position has been eliminated or involuntarily transferred. It differs from voluntary attrition, which is when an employee chooses to leave the company on their own accord. Involuntary attrition often has a larger impact on an organization because it can lead to lower morale and may cost more for replacement workers than voluntary attrition.
