Hard Measures Definition

What are hard measures? Hard measures are those that require a physical change or response from employees. They are also known as ‘carrots and sticks.’ Common hard measures include:

-Treating employees like children by monitoring their every move

-Docking pay for even the smallest infractions

-Disciplining employees with public humiliation

-Firing employees without warning or cause

While these may seem like effective ways to get employees to toe the line, they often backfire. Hard measures can lead to resentment and a feeling of being mistreated, which can lead to lower morale and productivity. In some cases, hard measures can even lead to legal action.
