Baseline

The Baseline refers to the original value or condition against which all subsequent measurements are compared. In order to accurately measure progress, it is essential to establish a baseline from which to take future measurements. There are a variety of ways to establish a baseline, depending on the type of data being collected. For example, when measuring website traffic, the baseline could be the average number of visitors over a certain period of time. Once a baseline has been established, future measurements can be taken to track progress and identify trends.
