Categorisation Definition
Categorisation is the process of classifying objects, ideas, or information according to pre-determined criteria. A key goal of categorisation is to enable communication and understanding by placing items into mutually exclusive, exhaustive, and well-defined categories.
Categories can be based on any number of characteristics, including but not limited to:
– Form (e.g. shapes)
– Function (e.g. tools)
– Contents (e.g. ingredients)
– Origin (e.g. countries)
– User demographics (e.g. age group)
The process of creating categories is known as taxonomy, and the resulting classification system is called a taxonomy
