Competency Definition

A competency is a trait or skill that is essential for success in a given job or role. Competencies can be either hard skills, which are specific, measurable abilities, or soft skills, which are personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively with others. Examples of hard skills include computer programming, financial analysis, and project management. Examples of soft skills include communication, teamwork, and customer service.

In order to be successful in any role, it is important to have a mix of both hard and soft skills. Hard skills are important because they enable you to perform specific tasks and meet objective goals. Soft skills are important because they enable you to interact effectively with other people and build relationships.

When defining competencies for a job or role, it is important to consider both the required hard skills and the desired soft skills. For example, if you are hiring for a customer service position, you would want to look for candidates who have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
