Conflict Theory Definition
Conflict theory is a social theory that posits that society is in a state of perpetual conflict due to competing interests between different social groups. The theory has its roots in the work of Karl Marx, who believed that society was divided into classes with conflicting interests: the ruling class (the bourgeoisie) who own the means of production and the working class (the proletariat) who sell their labor power. Conflict theory argues that these two groups are in constant conflict, as the ruling class seeks to maintain and extend its power, while the working class struggles to overthrow it.
