Functional Analysis

Functional Analysis Definition

A functional analysis is a method used to identify the specific functions of behavior. This process is often used to help develop a treatment plan for individuals with developmental disabilities or mental health conditions.

The first step in conducting a functional analysis is to gather information about the individual’s history and current environment. This can be done through interviews, observations, and reviews of records. Once this information has been collected, the next step is to identify patterns in the data that can be used to explain the individual’s behavior.

Once patterns have been identified, the final step is to develop hypotheses about why the behavior is occurring. These hypotheses are then tested through further observation and data collection. If the hypotheses are supported, they can be used to develop a treatment plan that targets the functions of the behavior.
