Kansei Engineering Definition
Kansei engineering is a Japanese approach to product development that focuses on the customer’s emotional response to a product. The goal of kansei engineering is to create a product that elicits a desired emotional response from the customer, thereby increasing customer satisfaction.
Kansei engineering takes into account the customer’s entire experience with a product, from the initial purchase decision through post-purchase use and disposal. The focus is on understanding the customer’s needs and wants, and then designing the product to meet those needs in a way that also elicits the desired emotional response.
The kansei engineering process typically includes four steps:
1. Identifying the target market and desired emotional response
2. Collecting data on customer needs and wants
3. Developing prototypes
4. Evaluating prototypes with target customers
Through these four steps, kansei engineers can develop products that are not only functionally effective, but also emotionally appealing to customers.
