Representation Definition
When we talk about representation, we’re referring to the ways in which people are portrayed in the media. This can include everything from the way they’re dressed and groomed, to the way they speak and behave. Representation can also refer to the casting of actors in roles, and the choice of storylines and plot points.
Media representations are often based on stereotypes, which can be harmful. They can reinforce negative ideas and assumptions about groups of people, and limit our understanding of them. stereotyoes can lead to discrimination and exclusion.
It’s important to be aware of the impact that media representations can have, and to think critically about the messages they’re sending. We can all play a role in challenging harmful stereotypes and promoting more positive, realistic and inclusive representations.
