Technical (Conformance) Specification Definition

A technical specification (sometimes called a conformance specification) is a document that defines requirements for a specific product, material, system, or service. It’s often used in procurement and regulatory contexts.

There are many different types of technical specifications, but they all share some common elements:

• A title or name that clearly identifies the document

• A date or revision number, so readers can identify the most recent version

• The name and contact information of the organization responsible for creating or maintaining the specification

• A section that defines the purpose or scope of the specification, including any limitations on its use

• One or more sections that describe the requirements in detail, using clear and concise language

• Any appendices or supporting documents that provide additional information
