Tooling Definition

Tooling is the process of creating and using tools. Tools are used to make things easier or faster, or to produce something of higher quality. In manufacturing, tooling generally refers to the process of creating and using tools for production.

There are three main types of tooling: jigs and fixtures, molds, and dies. Jigs and fixtures are specialized tools that help guide and position parts during assembly or machining. Molds are used to form parts out of materials like plastic or metal. Dies are similar to molds, but they are typically used to cut or stamp out parts from a sheet of material.

Tooling can be expensive, so it is important to carefully consider the type of tooling that is best suited for your application. For example, if you need to produce a large number of parts quickly, then investing in high-quality molds may be the best option. On the other hand, if you only need a few parts, then cheaper jigs and fixtures may suffice.
