Uncertainty Avoidance Index Definition

The Uncertainty Avoidance Index (UAI) is a cultural dimension first identified by Geert Hofstede. It measures the level of uncertainty avoidance within a society, which is the extent to which people feel threatened by ambiguity or uncertainty and try to avoid it.

Societies with a high level of uncertainty avoidance (high UAI) tend to be more rules-based, have stricter codes of conduct, and are less tolerant of change. They value formalities and procedures, and need clear guidelines in order to feel comfortable. In contrast, societies with a low level of uncertainty avoidance (low UAI) are more relaxed and tolerant of change. They are less concerned with rules and regulations, and more likely to take risks.

The UAI is one of four dimensions of cultural variation identified by Hofstede, along with individualism-collectivism, power distance, and masculinity-femininity.
