Unspsc Classification Definition
The United Nations Standard Products and Services Code (UNSPSC) is a hierarchical coding system used to classify all products and services. The UNSPSC was developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and is maintained by the UNSPSC Council. The UNSPSC is designed to be used by both public and private sector organizations in a variety of industries.
The UNSPSC consists of four levels of codes:
– Level 1: Segment
– Level 2: Family
– Level 3: Class
– Level 4: Commodity
Each level of code is represented by a two-digit number. For example, the code for ‘Automobiles’ would be 15, while the code for ‘Trucks and Buses’ would be 20. The full code for ‘Trucks and Buses’ would therefore be 15.20.
To use the UNSPSC, simply select the appropriate code from each level that best describes the product or service being classified. In some cases, it may not be necessary to use all four levels of codes. For example, if you are only interested in classifying products as either ‘Automobiles’ or ‘Trucks and Buses’, you would only need to use Level 1 and 2 codes.
